ELLA Herbals Natural Handmade Skin Care

Here is a list of the Top 10 Safest Sunscreens, compiled from the EWG Skin Deep Cosmetic Database which is a great resource for those interested in the toxicity of their cosmetics. EWG Skin Deep is dedicated to providing the public with information about the toxic chemicals in everyday products that many manufacturers don't tell you about.

In compiling this list I realized that what would be more effective is to create the Top 10 Brands that manufacture safe sunscreens. All of the brands I’ve named here have a EWG rating of 2 or below which means they are a low hazard with low health concerns. I checked out the websites for the top 10 below and looked up their prices to help you shop around.

This list is rated by the EWG as having a low hazard in regards to it’s ingredients. The EWG also rates the UVB Protection as Good and the UVA protection as Excellent which makes them very safe for sun exposure as well.

Convenience comes to mind and these products are not readily available in your local pharmacy or grocery store, nor are they inexpensive. So if you are not an online shopper, don’t have the extra $$ or you’re in a jam and need sunscreen right away I have found a few popular options that are rated a 3 by the EWG so they are less toxic than most.

1. Coppertone Sensitive Skin Sunscreen Lotion, Faces, SPF 50

2. Coppertone Water Babies Sunscreen Lotion, SPF 50

3. CVS Sunscreen with Zinc Oxide, SPF 45+

4. Ocean Potion Clear Zinc Oxide Face Potion SPF 45

I’ve tried Badger’s sunscreen for face and body and found that is works great although it’s a bit thick and leaves a slight white tinge on your skin. It has a great water barrier and last for a while on the skin. I ordered a 3 pack online and got a really good deal.

The other brand I’ve tried is the Coppertone Water Babies Sunscreen which also works very good, is much easier to apply to the skin but I feel like it needs to be applied more often than the Badgers. With a rating of 3 it’s on the low end of the hazard scale so I feel safe enough using it on my daughter and me when I need the convenience.

I hope this has been helpful and that you enjoy your fun in the sun while protecting your skin from the harmful rays as well as your body from toxic chemicals.

Are you and your family using a sunscreen that may be damaging your body with toxic chemicals? There is research linking many health concerns with toxic chemicals found in a number of sunscreens, including kids and baby products.

A great resource for those interested in the toxicity of their cosmetics, including sunscreens is the EWG Skin Deep Cosmetics Database, an organization dedicated to providing the public with information about the toxic chemicals in everyday products that many manufacturers don't tell you about.

I compiled a list from this database of sunscreens to avoid. I will be following up this article with the Top 10 Safest Sunscreens next week so stay tuned.

These sunscreens do their job protecting your skin from harmful UVB & UVA sun rays but at the cost of polluting your body with toxic chemicals. Safer choices are available and work just as well in protecting your skin from the sun without toxins entering your body or your families. Read the labels on everything and try to stay away from the mentioned ingredients.

Diaper rash can be such persistent, painful and heart wrenching problem for babies and their mothers. As a mother myself I remember feeling so desperate to get rid of my babies diaper rash.

I didn't understand why companies didn't use shea butter as the main ingredient for diaper creams. Unrefined shea butter is the best for rashes because of it's high vitamin content and fatty acids. It leaves a breathable protective layer on your skin which is so important when trying to heal such a sensitive area.

When I started using pure shea butter on my daughters diaper rash I noticed some relief right away but I knew it could be better and faster. That's when I developed Mom's Magic Butter, I blended shea butter and other amazing oils and essential oils that all compounded together making an ultra fast healing butter. My babies diaper rash would be gone within 24-48 hours and that's the best feeling for a mother with a suffering baby!

Not only does Mom's Magic work great for diaper rash it is also great for all kinds of rashes, eczema and psoriasis. Using it consistently many people have found relief from their persistent skin issues.

Unfortunately most commercial products don’t include enough unrefined shea butter to really make a difference and because it’s been so refined all the nutrients in the shea are stripped away. What do you use on your babies diaper rash or your own persistent skin ailment? How fast and well does it work?

We cannot stop our skin from aging, in fact we can't prevent aging at all, it's going to happen, I'm sorry to break it to you like this. There is however hope, with a number of things we can do to keep our skin's aging process in line with our actual age. The fight is not with time but with a more attainable opponent.

The two most damaging influences to our skin is lack of protection from the sun and free radical damage. The first is simple to solve, where at least an SPF 15 sunscreen when you are in the sun for longer than 15 minutes. The second is also simple but not everyone understands what free radicals are and how to prevent them. I've done the research for you and here's what I've found.

Free radicals are unstable oxygen molecules that are missing an electron so they steal electrons from other molecules. They are formed because bonds change and split occasionally creating a free radical in our cells. Our bodies are equipped to handle a reasonable number of free radicals but when we factor in outside influences such as, pollution, cigarette smoke, radiation, pesticides, and over exposure to the sun we create more free radicals than our bodies handle.

Excessive amounts of free radicals lead to cell damage, cell damage can take place anywhere you have cells which means everywhere including your skin and all it's layers. The worst thing for your skin is to have excessive cell damage to the dermis layer which is where the ever important "youth juice" is located, collagen and elastin.

The power of antioxidants…

Antioxidants, such as vitamin A, vitamin C, and green tea give free radicals one of their electrons making them stable and ending the chain reaction of free radical formation which helps prevent unnecessary damage to cells. That and protection from the sun is the key to keeping your skin aligned with you age.

SO it's important to use skin care products that have and abundance of antioxidants (and hopefully all natural ingredients) and reapply them because they don’t last forever on your skin and free radicals will continue to develop unless you "make friends" with them using antioxidants.

This research has got me so ecstatic because there are so many wonderful antioxidant ingredients in my products that are beneficial and help free our skin cells from free radicals damage. I'm constantly having ideas on what other products I can develop that will be healthy for our skin….stay tuned.

Ingredients Highlight of the Month!

Collagen Powder is used in the cosmetic industry to help maintaining optimal skin hydration, stimulate collagen biosynthesis to strengthen and refine the contours of the skin. It is used to protect the skin from the oxidative stress.
Collagen powder has a good film forming and restructuring effect due to its high content in essential constituent amino acids of the skin.

Acai Berry extract has a high concentration of antioxidants that help with aging skin. The antioxidant concentration in this berry is 10 times higher that a red grape and 10 to 30 time higher than that of red wine.

Acerola Berry has one of the highest concentrations of Vitamin C, which helps stimulate the connective tissue formation in your skin as well as the collagen-elastin network.

All ELLA Herbal products are made to order and are customizable. Please see the list below of what's available to order. If you'd like to place and order or have questions email me at michelle@ellaherbals.com.
